Member Spotlight: Rosie’s Emporium

We recently sat down with Rosaleen Stewart, owner of Rosie’s Emporium, to find out more about her business and why she joined Lisburn Chamber.

How long have you been in business?

Almost 8 years, I started on markets in Nov 2016 as it was too close to Christmas to get a shop signed for and ready to trade for the season. The first shop opened in March 2017, and wasn’t much over 400 square foot.  I expanded into Lisburn Square in November 2019, just ahead of the pandemic closing us down for 11 months of the first two years.  And the most recent move was into Bow Street Mall in September 2022.

What made you decide to start your own business?

I always wanted to have my own business but the fear of leaving a secure job stopped me.  I found out on a Friday in September I was to be made redundant within six weeks.  So I took the chance and my £4000 pay out and got stuck straight in.  And as for why a giftshop?  I’ve always put a lot of thought into any gift I buy, and as the multinationals have taken over the high street, there has been less choice and uniqueness available.  So Rosie’s Emporium was born.

Describe Rosie’s Emporium for those who may not be familiar with it.

It’s as the name suggests – an emporium! I stock everything from home, baby, occasions, seasonal goods, beauty, alternative gifting – everything but the kitchen sink.  The range is constantly changing, and rarely will I order the same item twice.  I love variety, and that’s definitely what you see as soon as you walk through the front door.

Do you have any advice for those considering starting their own business?

Go for it! Be prepared for it costing more than you think, it will never be 100% perfect, but get those doors open and start trading.  Be ready for a lot of feedback, both positive and negative, but keep going.  And build a network of like minded people around you, they will be needed when the bad days hit in, but also there to celebrate with you on the good days.

Why did you join Lisburn Chamber of Commerce?

I joined as a solopreneur as I was new to Lisburn and wanted to connect with the business community. It’s great for networking, sharing information, socialising and there is always someone in the membership to sound ideas off and collaborate with. I feel it gives me more of a voice within the Lisburn business community and as well with the local council.  The range of events throughout the year are excellent and provide great learning experiences.

You can take a look at Rosie’s Emporium here, or pop in and see her for a chat in Bow Street Mall.
